81 mm Anti-thermal/Anti-laser Smoke Grenade

81 mm caliber anti-thermal/anti-laser smoke grenade based on red phosphorus has been developed by DRDO. The grenade is mounted on either side of the turret of tank and electrically actuated from the MBT grenade launcher. The grenade forms a smoke screen within 4 to 5.4 s at about 90 m distance on bursting above the ground. A white dense smoke screen is formed from a single grenade, which is capable of providing obscuration in the visible and infrared range for a minimum of 20 s. The smoke screen is capable of defeating the thermal imagers and Nd-YAG laser range finder. Anti thermal, anti laser smoke grenade is being developed by Pune city based High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL).

According to HEMRL director Subananda Rao.

“The smoke screen is generated in around four seconds and remain there for around 20 seconds allowing tanks to escape. This is the latest technology in this field and the last trials with the Army happened recently in August,2009”

These grenades increase tank survivability on the field,The principal is simple enough - all tanks use laser range finders to judge the distance of the enemy tank; the “81 mm- smoke grenade” developed by HEMRL produces a smoke screen that is impenetrable for lasers; when the enemy is unable to judge the distance or find the coordinates of its target tank, it will be unable to fire anti tank missiles. Scientists’ say the smoke grenades currently with India need 10 seconds to reach the target and generate smoke over 35 seconds. The latest ones developed by HEMRL begin generating smoke in four seconds and provide a smoke screen for around 20 seconds. An instantaneous smoke screen capable of obscuring Electrooptic equipments has been developed, Similar performance can be achieved by filling this composition in ammunition of different calibers.

The 81 mm anti-thermal, anti-laser smoke grenade has been developed and demonstrated to the Army and found to be highly effective. This bursting type smoke grenade is capable of forming the smoke screen instantaneously, to defeat the night vision aids and laser beams, for more than 20 seconds.
