Home Navy Ships Destroyers Rajput Class Guided Missile Destroyer

Rajput Class Guided Missile Destroyer

The Rajput class guided-missile destroyers built for the Indian Navy are modified versions of Soviet Kashin class destroyers. They are also known as Kashin-II class. The ships were built in Russia after considerable Indian design modifications to the Kashin design. The helicopter pad in the original design was replaced with a flight elevator.

Rajput class destroyers were the first ships in the Indian Navy to deploy the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile systems. The systems were deployed during a mid-life refit of the ships. The missile system has 8 missiles with bow mounted launchers.

INS Ranvijay was deployed with updated vertical launchers for the BrahMos missile.

The Kashin class ship was designed to fulfill a variety of roles including anti-aircraft and anti-submarine warfare to defend carrier task forces from submarines, low-flying aircraft, and cruise missiles. Five units of a variant of the modified Kashin class design were built in the former USSR for export to India in the 1980s. Construction began after an interval of nearly a decade following the conclusion of building this class for the Soviet navy, and significant delays were experienced in the delivery of this batch.
