MUMBAI: Maharashtra government is committed to set up India's largest nuclear power project at Jaitapur and address the apprehensions of the local population.
The assurance was given by governor K Sankaranarayanan in his address to the joint sitting of the state Legislature on the first day of the budget session which began here on Monday.
He also asserted that the state government will take up issues related to adequate supply of cheap fuel for power plants with the central government.
"The government will facilitate the implementation of India's largest nuclear power project at Jaitapur and will address apprehensions of the local population," Sankaranarayanan said.
He said energy is a fundamental requirement for rapid economic development. "Various steps have been taken to reduce losses and control peak loads to make Maharashtra free from load-shedding by 2012.
"Mahagenco has commissioned thermal power projects at Paras and Parli and will commission the power project at Khaperkheda very soon.

As soon as he began his speech, Shiv Sena MLC Diwakar Raote stood up and urged him to deliver his address in Marathi.
When the governor started speaking in English, he said he wanted to register his protest and squatted on the aisle of the central hall where the Governor was delivering his address.
He was joined by rest of the Sena members including group leader in the Legislative Assembly, Subhash Desai.
As soon as he began his speech, Shiv Sena MLC Diwakar Raote stood up and urged him to deliver his address in Marathi.
