TOKYO: Japan's defense ministry says North Korea is developing a new mid-range ballistic missile that can reach as far as the US territory of Guam.
The ministry says in its annual report that the North Korean missile, called the "Musudan," is based on Russian technology acquired in the 1990s. It is designed for launch from mobile platforms. Tuesday's report was the first time Japan has officially mentioned the missile by name.
The 2011 white paper also says Japan is concerned with China's increasing naval activity in the waters surrounding Japan's shores and that Tokyo is taking measures to bolster the country's coastal defenses.
