MUMBAI: It is time for Israel and Iran to start a positive dialogue to make West Asia free from nuclear war threat, an Israeli security expert said today.
Any attack on Iran's nuclear facilities by the US will not affect the Iranians. The attack will be absorbed by them and after keeping keep quiet for some time, they will restart building their capability, Yair Evron said.
On the other hand, an Israeli attack on Iran's atomic centres would only complicate the situation in the volatile region, said Evron, a Professor at Tel Aviv University's Institute for National Security studies and Department of Political Sciences.
He was speaking at a seminar here on "Israel-Iran nuclear relationship: confrontation or co-existence?"
It is difficult to stop a proliferator unless there is a major international effort. Even the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN's nuclear watchdog, has a limited role of inspection only, Evron noted.
The US under President Barack Obama had tried to be more accommodative towards Tehran, but there was no response from the latter's side.

It is important to have a positive dialogue with Iran, Evron said.
Noting that Israel has a second strike capability and no first strike policy, he said "I am not in favour of any attack on Iran for its potential nuclear threat."
"Both Israel and Iran have to learn lessons from dialogues between US and erstwhile USSR (and now Russia) and between India and Pakistan to bring stability in West Asia," the security expert added.
