[PIB] The Air Force Record Office (AFRO), New Delhi was accredited with the coveted ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System Certification here today. Air Marshal PK Barbora, Vice Chief of the Air Staff, Indian Air Force who presided over the function, received the certificate from ISO certifying agency. Air Mshl Barbora in his address congratulated the AFRO team led by its Air Officer Commanding, Air Cmde HJ Walia.
Air Force Record Office is one of the largest HR organisations not only amongst the defence services but also in the country. Ever since its inception in 1939 during World War II, AFRO has evolved to its mighty stature and is a professional and contemporary HR organisation today. It was established as a separate section at Ambala to maintain the records of the Airmen. In Dec 1941, this section moved to Walton (Lahore). In Feb 1942, the IAF record section was merged with the Base Personnel Office at Bombay. After the war in 1945, the Record Office was named as IAF Record Office and in 1946 it moved as an independent unit to Red Hills Lake, Madras.

Subsequently it moved to New Delhi as part of Air Head quarters in Oct 1947. Due to increased IAF strength in terms of men and machine, AFRO moved to its present location at Subroto Park, New Delhi in Aug 1966, as an independent unit.
AFRO works with the aim of Right Man at Right Place at Right Time and ensures placement of its personnel in order to bridge the gap between organisational aim and individual aspirations. AFRO today takes care of all the HR requirement of its Personnel Below Officer Rank from their induction, training, placements, postings, career progression, record keeping and pensionary benefits, and also assists the outgoing / retiring personnel in their resettlement through a dedicated placement cell which facilitates employment opportunities in liaison with govt PSUs as well private sector organisation.
The complete HR management is through an automated system which exploits the advancements in the field of information technology and resources management. Today, this mighty organisation prides itself to be transparent and easily accessible with the help of its own intranet that is connected to various IAF Units and Formations located throughout the country. The distinction of this world class Human Resource Organisation has been achieved by continuously improving its processes and systems through regular feedbacks from the field units. AFRO has become a force multiplier by facilitating operational preparedness as also sustenance of morale of highly qualified and trained Human Resources available in the IAF.
AFROs well documented procedures and processes which are followed in letter and spirit, its proactive response, quality consciousness, focus on customers satisfaction and continual improvements were highly appreciated by the certifying body. The certification is a testimony to the fact that the services rendered by AFRO are in conformity with international standards.
