NUEVO LAREDO: A clash between soldiers and armed men left 13 dead in the town of Rio Bravo, on Mexico's northeastern border with the United States, an army statement has said.
Thirteen outlaws were killed, one was arrested and vehicles and weapons were seized after soldiers resisted an attack in Tamaulipas state on Thursday, said a statement from the fourth military division on Friday.
The soldiers encountered armed men during a routine inspection and the men shot at them as they fled, said a military official, who declined to be named.
Authorities blame rising violence in Tamaulipas in recent years on a dispute between the Gulf drug gang and its former allies the Zetas.
Some 35,000 people have died in suspected drug-related violence since the launch of a government offensive on organised crime in 2006, according to official figures.
Under increasing criticism for its failure to stem the violence, the government on Friday denied comments by Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa that drug gangs now held sway over complete areas of Mexico.

"Organized crime doesn't dominate complete territories in Mexico," said a foreign ministry statement.
Correa also said Thursday that Mexican gangs were working in Ecuador.
