The Indian navy chief, Admiral Nirmal Verma said on Thursday that the first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC), the Vikrant-class carrier being built at the Cochin Shipyard, has been delayed due to problems with the gearbox and a truck carrying the generators suffering an accident.

According to him, this has had a ‘cascading’ effect on the construction process and has led to delays.

The Vikrant was supposed to have been launched this year, but now Cochin Shipyard plans to take advantage of these delays to complete more fabrication work than had been planned before the launch, which is now expected to take place in the middle of next year.

Sea trials of the warship are expected to take place by 2014.
