New Delhi — The Indian Defence Ministry is currently liaising with the Russian RAC-MiG Corporation to sort out a recurring problem with the newly-inducted MiG-29 K fleet. India is negotiating a price for the draft supplement agreement (DSA) with Russia to acquire equipment to resolve the problems pertaining to the MiG-29 K fleet.
As per the Indian Navy, the newly acquired MiG-29 K fleet is witnessing tyre-bursts during the use of emergency brakes. Apparently, the emergency brakes are applied when there is hydraulic failure. In addition, the emergency applications are jamming the brakes and heightening the chance of tyre skidding and tyre-bursts.
The Indian Navy has suggested that a DSA is expected to address that shortcoming. The DSA is expected to ensure supply of ground support items and spares as well as life-long serviceability. Currently, all the six MiG-29k with the Indian Navy are still under warranty.
Apparently, the DSA for the MiG-29 K has become imperative since only last week, a pilot of a MIG 29 K fighter aircraft brought the aircraft to a halt safely after the aircraft suffered a tyre burst because of hydraulic failure while landing.

NEW DELHI: Defence Minister A K Antony has sacked a senior Navy officer for having sexual relations with a Russian woman in Moscow as head of the Indian team overseeing the refit of aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov there.
Commodore Sukhjinder Singh was posted in Moscow between 2005 to 2007 as the Indian warship production superintendent to oversee Gorshkov's refit when he developed the illicit relationship with the woman.
"He (Singh) will be discharged. He will not be in service now," Antony told reporters when asked about the progress in the case.
Singh, who has at least two years of service left, will have to immediately pack his bags.
Singh's affair was exposed in April 2010, three years after his posting in Russia when his explicit pictures with the woman were brought to the notice of the Defence Ministry.
Soon after receiving the pictures, the Navy had ordered a Court Of Inquiry against him to establish his relations with the woman and whether the relationship had affected the Admiral Gorshkov deal in any way.

NEW DELHI: Russia has snubbed India in the recent months by cancelling two important bilateral war games, usually held under a well-established arrangement, a senior official said on Monday. The move has raised eyebrows in the Indian defence establishment.
The Russians have called off the Indra series of navy and army war games in the recent weeks, baffling the Indian defence ministry, the official said.
Russia had late last month called off the Indra series of exercises with the Indian Navy, despite the latter's warships -- including guided missile destroyers INS Delhi, INS Ranvir and INS Ranvijay -- reaching Vladivostok, an eastern Russian port town on the Pacific Ocean.
The reason cited by Russians for the sudden decision to do away with the naval war game was the non-availability of its warships due to their expected deployment in aid of Japan after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the official said here.
But what came as a shocker for the Indians was that the Russian warships later sailed out for an exercise of their own, instead of the cited deployment in aid of Japan.

 [RIA Novosti] Russia will keep to the time period specified in the contract for the retrofit of the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier for the Indian Navy, the head of Russia’s united shipbuilding corporation said on Tuesday. “We are catching up with the retrofit of the Admiral Gorshkov,” Roman Trotsenko said. “We will fulfill the obligations Russia has undertaken.” The two countries have signed a deal on upgrading the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier, following an earlier statement from the Indian government’s security committee that it would allocate $2.3 billion to retrofit the ship. The initial refit agreement of $750 million went up by an additional $1.5 billion. In line with the contract, the aircraft carrier will be handed over to India by 2012.

Contracts and supplementary agreements comprising repair and re-equipping, logistic supports, training, etc were concluded with Russian side for acquisition of the aircraft carrier, ex-Admiral Gorshkov, in January 2004 at a cost of US Dollars 974 million. The Russian side submitted a revised Master Schedule indicating a delay in the project and an increase in price for repair and re-equipping of theaircraft carrier, due to increase in scope of work not originally envisaged.

NEW DELHI: Aiming to strengthen its medium-lift helicopter fleet, the IAF is planning to procure 59 more Mi-17 IV choppers in addition to the 80 ordered earlier from Russia.
The 80 choppers ordered in 2008 will be for enhancing the medium-lift helicopter fleet of the IAF whereas the next 59 would be used for replacing the older ones in the existing fleet which will be phased out in coming years, defence ministry officials said here.
The proposal for acquiring the 59 choppers has already been cleared by the defence acquisition council and will be put up for cabinet committee on security clearance soon, they said.
India will start receiving the first of 80 Mi-17 transport helicopters from Russia by the end of this year which will help in augmenting its capability to carry out missions in high-altitude areas and relief operations.
The remaining choppers are likely to be inducted in phased manner in next four years.
In 2008, India had signed a deal with Russia to supply 80 Mi-17s to augment its existing fleet of around 150 Mi-8 and Mi-17 medium-lift choppers, which have over five tonne load carrying capability and are also used to ferry troops and VIPs.
